“Sacred daughters of energy,” I whispered.

“Yes. The myth of the sacred feminine has been depicted using various symbols throughout history. It goes as far back as the origin of writing: women made of energy forged within the womb of Venus, the goddess of beauty and fertility. The circle or the orb is its strongest symbol, which relates to perfection and the never-ending flow of energy.

“The myth says Venus created her daughters with fragments of her own energy to populate the planet with perfection and beauty. Zeus thought it was too dangerous to create such powerful beings, but he was unwilling to deny Venus of her wishes. He pleaded that her daughters should not be as perfect as she was, so he removed part of their energy and divided it among a few humans. Thus, the daughters could only achieve their true perfection when they found such humans. Zeus knew humans were flawed by nature so the daughters’ love for the humans would be their greatest weakness.”

“Did you keep in touch with Aurora?” Peter moved to stand near my chair.

“No. I thought the note was a metaphor for the way she broke my heart. I was angry and, with time, resentful. I never heard anything from Aurora until … ” Byron looked at me again.

She pushed me against the wall and told me — whether I wanted to or not — I was going to help her. For the first time in ten years, I felt my heart beat again as if the block of ice around it had finally melted. It was true. She was a daughter of Venus and she didn’t choose to leave me. She had no choice.”

“What did she want?” Peter asked.

“Another witch had told her about a male divinity able to manipulate energy.”

“The wizard?” I was suddenly filled with hope.

“Well, not a wizard per se, but that was who she was referring to. Since François was dead, I didn’t understand her motivation until she showed me a picture of you.”

“Did you help her?” I said.

“Of course, your mother was the love of my life. I had no strength to deny her anything.”

“What about the wizard?” Oliver asked, rejoining the conversation.

“Aurora and I broke in the Vatican library and stole an Egyptian scroll that detailed the story of Isis.”

“Isis? Even I know about her myth,” Peter interjected and, when we all stared at him, he shrugged. “I’ve seen The Secret of Isis re-runs.”

“This scroll
